Brazil agrees to lower police retirement age after violent protest
The Brazilian government decided Wednesday to lower the minimum retirement age for police officers. The day before, members of the police officers’ unions urged Congress to reject the bill, which is aimed to decrease public debt. The union members broke the government building’s windows and argued with guards, who retaliated using pepper spray and stun grenades. The legislation, which will decrease the minimum retirement age to 55, will be voted on on May 2. While union members are threatening months of demonstrations, Congressman Arthur Maia, who is sponsoring the bill, has since stated that he expects the legislation to pass.
