British Columbia Forest Companies Face Strike Threat
Representatives for over 4,500 British Columbian forestry workers threatened to strike after contract negotiations with 31 forestry companies failed. Contract talks with the companies fell through when the union wanted to place a moratorium on the introduction of new shifts for the workers. Forest Industrial Relations Ltd., the association representing the companies, argues that greater flexibility in scheduling worker shifts is needed in order to remain competitive in the face of an appreciation of the Canadian dollar which has weakened lumber sales to the United States.
