Brown Pressed by Unions, Lawmakers to Boost Spending
Members of the U.K.'s Labour Party and unions are lobbying Prime Minister Gordon Brown to increase government spending to stimulate the economy. The Trade Union Congress suggested funding be set aside for projects such as clean energy, building and insulating homes, and renewing the rail network. The group claims that the U.K. hasn't been generous enough in economic stimulus attempts, but the Bank of England is simultaneously warning the government about the budget deficit. The Treasury's shortfall is expected to reach 150 billion pounds this year, indicating an increase in taxes or decrease in spending will eventually be necessary to combat the debt.
