Bungie video game developer announces surprise layoffs
Bungie, a video game development company that created the renowned video game Destiny 2, recently laid off various employees. The company’s newest release, Lightfall, did not do well, and the popularity of Destiny 2 will plateau in the future without a true sequel, but new expansions will most likely keep the game popular for the foreseeable months. Sony recently allocated 3.7 billion dollars to the company, with one-third of the funds dedicated toward staff retention. Bungie announced layoffs this past week, and the news caught employees by surprise based on the company’s Destiny 2 success and the Sony budget. Various departments were affected by the job cuts, with many laid-off employees being in the publishing department and other front-facing departments, such as social media and communications.
