Business, Unions Face Off Over 'Captive Audience' Workplace Meetings
A union representing employees at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut is battling with the owners over legislation that would make it illegal for companies to force workers to attend meetings about employees’ personal politics or religious views. With state elections just around the corner, the AFL-CIO is pushing for “captive audience” legislation, that would give workers the choice to refuse attending company meetings. A similar campaign failed to pass the General Assembly in 2011. The union’s president, Lori Pelletier, linked the issue to campaign finance laws that make it easier for corporations to influence political campaigns.
