Bylines are Withheld in Protest by Journalists
For the second time in the past four months, the vast majority of writers, reporters and photographers at The Washington Post went on a byline strike yesterday as part of ongoing contract negotiation disputes (see WIT for June 5, 2002). The words the words "By a Washington Post Staff Writer" will likely replace authors’ names for the rest of the week according to a co-chair of the Washington Post local of the Communications Workers of America (CWA) affiliated Newspaper Guild. The 1,450 Guild members employed by the Washington Post have been without a contract for over four months now, and the negotiations are currently before a federal mediator.
