Calif. approves new heat rules to protect workers
The California Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board voted to put new regulations in place protecting workers who work outside from the heat. The regulations apply to agriculture, landscaping, construction, oil, gas extraction and those transporting heavy materials. The new standards require employers to provide shade large enough for a quarter of their crew once temperatures hit 85 degrees. Labor advocates say that some of the provisions will not protect workers effectively, and that employers can still intimidate workers into not taking breaks. The rules will take effect this fall.
