California labor union feud lands on Brown?s desk
Bill 54 in California pits the State Building and Construction Trades Council Union (SBCTCU) against the United Steelworkers to determine who is qualified to build offshore refineries. Jthe bill, which would require a ?skilled and trained workforce? very similar to what the SBCTCU's members offer, was introduced after an intense fire at Chevron?s Richmond refinery. The Steelworkers claim that the bill will actually decrease safety because their ?experienced? workforce will be excluded from the projects. Both unions have petitioned the governor because the bill enjoys strong majority support in the state legislature and is on its way to the his desk.
