California Rideshare Drivers and Supporters Step Up Push to Unionize
Rideshare drivers in California are amping up efforts to unionize, rallying at the State Capitol in support of Assembly Bill 1340, which would give them collective bargaining rights. The bill challenges Prop 22, the 2020 voter-approved measure that classifies gig workers as independent contractors, limiting their ability to unionize. Sponsored by lawmakers Buffy Wicks and Marc Berman, AB 1340 aims to curb practices like wage theft and algorithm-based firings while giving drivers a stronger voice in negotiating pay and working conditions. Labor leaders and lawmakers argue the bill would help rebalance power between drivers and companies like Uber and Lyft. Companies, meanwhile, point to rising driver earnings and broad support for Prop 22. If passed, AB 1340 would mark a major shift in how gig work is regulated in California.
