California State University students vote in favor of unionization
Thousands of students at California State University Campuses have voted in favor of union representation. Students will be represented by the California State University Employees Union, and the union will represent the largest number of student workers in the country. The union will represent twenty thousand student assistants and student workers and currently represents sixteen thousand staff and faculty members. Students voted to join the union because they were seeking greater pay, improved benefits, sick days, and paid parking. Student workers currently get paid California minimum wage, are not permitted to take sick days, and are restricted to a maximum of twenty hours per week. Students have stated that these factors can make it difficult to make ends meet.
