Cambodian garment workers charged over strike violence
Sixteen garment workers and union representatives were arrested at a garment factory in Cambodia that makes clothes for Nike after strikes erupted at the plant last month. The Free Trade Union claims that an additional 288 workers were terminated from their jobs at the plant for going on strike. The company maintains that only 62 employees were dismissed for violent conduct during the stoppage. Four thousand of the company?s 5,000 employees participated in the strike before the protests were shut down by the police. Strike activity in Cambodia is on the rise as unions and workers have begun to agitate for improved wages and safety conditions.
