Canadian auto workers union proposes wage cuts ahead of strike deadline next week
The Canadian Auto Workers say that they have proposed wage cuts for new employees, in an effort to settle their contract and avoid striking next week. The auto companies say that they need to cut costs in Canada in order to continue producing there, and that they want similar concessions to those gotten from the American workers. While workers would start at a lower rate, they would eventually make the same amount as older workers, differing from the two tier system that they company wants, and that American workers accepted. The union also agreed to pension changes. The deadline for a strike is Monday, and the CAW says that they will choose a company to strike closer to the deadline.
