Caterpillar Locks Out Workers in Canada
Caterpillar has locked out over 400 workers at a locomotive factory in Canada. The Canadian Auto Workers, which represents workers at the plant rejected a proposal, which they say would cut wages in half and reduce benefits and pensions. The company that owns the factory, a subsidiary of Caterpillar, said that workers would remain locked out until they ratified a contract, and that the lack of a strike showed that members would accept their offer. The union says that they think the company wants to move production to the United States, where wages and benefits are much lower.
