CAW members vote 87 percent in favor of GM deal
The Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) Union announced Wednesday that members had voted to accept the new deal with General Motors, with 87% voting in favor of the concessions. The contract freezes wages until 2012, eliminates year-end bonuses, and decreases the amount of paid time off workers can receive. It also addresses several plant closings. Those opposed felt that the contract accomplished little and failed to address pension problems. Those who voted in favor, including union president Ken Lewenza, said that although the contract was painful, it felt necessary in the current circumstances. Lewenza said he is glad that CAW has played its part in creating a solution, but recognizes that no number of union concessions will solve the crisis.
