Charter school teachers in Chicago plan to strike beginning in February
Teachers at two charter schools in the Chicago area are planning to go on strike in early February if a new contract agreement is not reached soon. The teachers at the Instituto del Progreso Latino charter schools are represented by the Chicago Teachers Union. All the unionized teachers voted in favor of the strike in December, stating that they were willing to take strike action if negotiations between the school management and the union did not significantly progress. Teachers are seeking increased bilingual staff members, improved pay, and greater benefits for both teachers and students. The charter schools also currently do not have any special education teachers due to all the special education teachers resigning before the school year began.
