Chesapeake Crabbers Face Changing Workforce, Murky Future
In the Chesapeake Bay, there has been a reduced number of crab fisherman and the industry could be in jeopardy. Children of fisherman are no longer following in their parents footsteps and are instead looking for jobs elsewhere that have a more predictable income. In addition, environmental conditions have led to a reduced number of crab available to catch. Large fishing operations have begun to hire seasonal workers from Mexico to combat a shrinking labor market.
