Chicago labor board upholds decision requiring St. Xavier to count adjunct unionization votes
Adjunct professors at St. Xavier University won an important victory Monday when the NLRB office in Chicago upheld a 2011 ruling to count ballots in a unionization vote at the school. St. Xavier, a Catholic university, had sought a review of the earlier decision on the grounds that it was exempt from union organizing as a religious institution. The NLRB's ruling stated St. Xavier provided a secular education and therefore could not claim the exemption. Further, the ruling requires the previous unionization votes, impounded during the review, be released and counted. The university still has an opportunity to seek a review by the NLRB's national office.
