Chicago steel manufacturer files WARN notice, notifying employees of upcoming layoffs and permanent factory closure
Wheatland Tube, a steel manufacturer that is a subsidiary of Zekelman Industries, will shut down a Chicago area factory, and the factory closure will result in layoffs affecting 230 workers. Zekelman Industries is headquartered in the Chicago loop, and the factory is located in the south side of the city. The company filed a WARN notice that stated that the factory would shut down operations and employees would be terminated. Companies are required by federal law to file a WARN notice and notify workers two months in advance if the company is conducting mass layoffs. Wheatland Tube stated that layoffs will begin in early November and occur on a rolling basis, but did not provide a date for when the factory will officially close. Zekelman Industries will offer affected employees with severance packages and outplacement services and has offered transfer positions to certain factory employees.
