Chicago Teachers Union Plays Hardball
Chicago’s school reopening plan is hanging in the balance after the city’s teachers’ union filed an injunction that could delay a return to in-person learning. Public school students in Chicago have been learning remotely since March. A proposed phased reopening plan would have brought some pre-K and special education students back to classrooms on January 11th. Additionally, the plan stipulated that student in kindergarten through the eight grade would have moved to hybrid learning on February 1. One of the major points of contention between the Chicago Teachers' Unions (CTU) and Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is simultaneous teaching. CTU is not in favor of simultaneously teaching both in-person and virtual students, and for CPS simultaneous teaching is a hallmark of their reopening plan.
