Chinese Workers Reject Walmart?s Offer in Labor Dispute
Walmart had been ordered to reach a settlement with its former employees in China?s Hunan province by the end of the weekend. The offer Walmart made had the backing of the mediator, but it was apparent that it failed to win approval from the employees after final vote counts were released earlier today. Walmart offered each worker a lump sum of 3,000 yuan ($480 US), but a union representative said that the employees still felt disrespected by the company. Walmart only gave two weeks? notice before beginning layoffs and did not consult with workers regarding transition and termination compensation or benefits. The union and workers are calling many of the terminations illegal, as 30-days? notice is required by law.
