City Hospitals' Budget To Cut 500 More Jobs
The New York City Health and Hospital Corp. announced plans Tuesday to lay off about 500 more employees due to recent budget constraints. The group, the nation's largest public health system, has a $1.2 billion budget deficit for 2011. The layoffs are part of a larger plan to decrease the company's workforce by almost 10%, laying off 2,400 total over the next four years. Hurt by a large increase in uninsured patients in recent years, the company has potential plans to close one dental clinic and five public children's clinics, as well as decrease the number of beds at some locations. In this specific round of layoffs, management has said that, although all employee sectors could be affected, the majority of cuts will come from the blue-collar divisions, and administrative managers. Some contracts with full-time physicians may be cut, but almost no nurses are likely to lose their jobs.
