Clean, affordable housing will reduce exploitation of Indian textile workers: campaigners
The Tiruppur Exporters' Association, an Indian trade body, has requested that the government construct housing for textile workers in Southern India. Due to lack of available housing, employees currently live in hostels owned by the factories, leading to exploitative policies. The textile employees work 12 hour shifts, endure sexual harassment, and are discouraged from visiting their families and leaving the factory compound. Despite a recent legislative push to regulate the hostels, the Indian government has faced difficulties enacting any changes.
