Clinton to face grilling by union leaders on trade, economic issues
As President Obama moves ahead with negotiations for the TransPacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal, AFL-CIO federation leaders, representing over 12.5 million workers in 56 member unions, plan to hold an executive council meeting July 29-30, where trade is likely to be the lead topic on the agenda. Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, and Maryland governor Martin O'Malley are likely to attend and are expected to provide specifics on their policy agendas.
Although Clinton is the current front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination, her noncommittal response to TPP has drawn ire from labor leaders who expected her to strongly oppose the trade deal. The AFL-CIO will use the executive council meeting as a key step in deciding which candidate to endorse for the 2016 election.
