Company's Smoking Ban Means Off-Hours, Too
Weyco, an insurance benefits administrator in a small central Michigan town, has instituted a strict no-smoking policy. Company employees will be subject to random testing and those that fail will be fired. Although policies such as these have drawn criticism from civil liberties groups, employers in 46 states have significant legal leeway in regulating workers? behavior outside the office. The no-smoking policy was a response to the high cost of treating smoking-related illnesses.
