Contract negotiations between the United Auto Workers union and General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis become more tense
The United Auto Workers union is currently negotiating new contracts with major car companies in Detroit. The union represents thousands of General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis workers, and contract negotiations between the Big Three automakers and UAW will need to make significant progress or workers will potentially strike in September. The union is demanding a 40% raise in worker salaries spread over the coming years and has stated the increases are fair given that salaries of executives have significantly increased. Workers are also asking for increased benefits and programs to protect employees in the case that a factory shuts down. The automakers claim that many of these measures would hurt the future of the companies, but they are hoping to find common ground with UAW.
