Contract workers for Google garner widespread petition support and win pay raise to receive company's minimum wage standard
According to the Alphabet Worker's Union-CWA, contract workers for Google recently won a significant pay raise that will result in them making the company's minimum wage. This pay raise was the result of a successful petition that received thousands of signatures in favor of including these contract workers in the company-wide wages and benefits standards. As a result, the contract workers at Appen-RaterLabs, who are responsible for training and evaluating Google's algorithm, will receive salary increases to $15 an hour. This successful campaign demonstrates a common workplace issue within the machine-learning industry, because these computer systems are often monitored by human workers who are underpaid.
