Council poised to enact unpaid furlough for city workers
The D.C. City Council is expected to pass a budget for 2011 that includes four unpaid furlough days on holidays. The measure is an effort to close a $188 million budget deficit. While the furlough days include the Mayor and the City Council, neither talked about pay cuts for themselves as part of the cost-cutting measures. A report released last year showed that the Council Chairman is paid more than 49 states' governor. The Mayor said that the council members did not take a 3-5% cost of living adjustment last year, and that their pay, like everyone else, will be cut through furloughs.
