Cruise Labor Under Spotlight After Brazil Accuses Ship Of Subjecting Staff To ?Slave-Like Conditions?
Police in Brazil have ?rescued? crew members of the cruise ship MSC Maginifica who were subjected to ?slave-like conditions?. Thirteen of the ship?s employees suffered 16-hour work days and sexual harassment, but only 11 agreed to go with the Brazilian officers to a hotel. Before acting, Brazilian authorities reviewed thousands of pages of documentation, conducted hundreds of interviews, and received a tip-off by a crew member of the Maginifica before they made the decision to board the vessel during a stop in Salvador. Dr. Ross Klein, an expert on the Cruise Ship Industry, told International Business Times that often times cruise ships are registered in countries that have the most relaxed regulations or are least likely to pursue possible infractions.
