Cuomo, de Blasio join cable workers in rally to seek new contract with Spectrum
Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio spoke to striking cable workers on Monday during a rally of hundreds of union members. According the Cuomo, Spectrum Cable had failed to come through on its promise to expand broadband, part of a deal that allowed them to take over Time Warner Cable and receive a $13 million settlement with the state. The nearly 2,000 cable workers who are part of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 3 have been on strike for six months, as a result of an impasse in negotiations over proposed changes to retirement and health care benefits. According to the IEBW, Spectrum has been trying to replace the workers’ pension plans with matching contribution 401(k) accounts and stop contributing to a union health fund.
