Cuomo Urges MTA to Meet With Unions Today to Avoid Strike
In an effort to head off an impending strike by transportation workers for the Long Island Rail Road, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has gotten union representatives and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to sit down and resume talks. LIRR workers are currently set to go on strike at midnight on July 20 unless they receive a satisfactory new contract. The LIRR is the country's largest commuter-rail system, and a strike during peak tourist season could cost the state up to $50 million per day.
