Cut deeper, Mayor Bloomberg warns unions
New York City Mayor Bloomberg said he may layoff around 7,000 city employees. Bloomberg said that $350 million more must be cut from agency budgets, despite cuts of $3.1 billion already. The mayor also claimed that municipal unions haven't done enough to help the budget shortfall, and is asking unions to pay 10% of their healthcare costs in order to avoid the threatened layoffs. Union officials speculate that the demands and potential layoffs are a ?ploy? to secure more funding from the State. Negotiations between city unions and the mayor are ongoing.
