Daley sloughs off new union clout
Chicago Mayor Richard Daley for years has wielded legendary power over the City Council, but millions of dollars and squads of campaign foot soldiers provided by unions put organized labor squarely into the game after Tuesday's aldermanic runoff election. In the afterglow of several notable victories, union leaders were already talking about the issues they hope to promote through a new council that could be less likely to heed Daley's every command. Now the question becomes whether the seven new aldermen who received union backing will try to challenge Daley. However, on Wednesday, Daley refused to credit unions for the loss of some of his allies.
