Dartmouth College unwilling to bargain with unionized men’s basketball team, seeking federal court ruling
Dartmouth College administration has publicly refused to bargain with the college’s men's basketball team. The Dartmouth men’s basketball team recently unionized and is represented by the Service Employees International Union. Dartmouth College administration plans to challenge the players’ employee status and stated that it would not participate in collective bargaining under any circumstances. The administration is currently appealing a ruling issued by a National Labor Relations Board regional director. The ruling granted the student-athletes employee status, and if the administration’s appeal is rejected, Dartmouth College will be considered in violation of labor laws. This will result in unfair labor practices charges filed against the university, and the issue will be addressed in a federal court.
