Day laborers protest city action
Day laborers and their supporters held a rally on Monday to protest alleged harassment of potential employers by Chicago police officers. The day laborers have been gathering at an abandoned turnabout in Albany Park, but city officials want the day laborers to wait at an unused parking lot about 2 miles away. The day laborers refuse to use the alternative site because most of them are from Albany Park and do not wish to travel so far to find work. A spokeswoman for the Chicago Police said that no specific effort to rid the area of day laborers or the people who pick them up was being made.
