Deadlock in Ohio Over Union Rights
Labor unions in Ohio have stiffened their resolve in their fight against state Republicans to defeat a law that would drastically weaken public employees' ability to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement. With support from unions nationwide, Ohio public employees rejected a proposal to compromise on the new law, and demanded the bill be repealed. The proposed law, currently called Senate Bill 5, would force state workers to pay more into their health care and pension plans, in addition to eliminating nearly all their ability to collectively bargain. Ohio Republicans claim that it is unreasonable for the unions to ask to repeal the bill, and that doing so would prolong and exacerbate the fiscal difficulties facing towns and communities across the state.
