Deliveroo Riders Seek to Unionize and Gain Workers Rights
Deliveroo drivers, currently classified as independent contractors, are taking legal action to be granted rights like paid leave and minimum wage. Deliveroo couriers deliver take-out restaraunt food. At present, Deliveroo drivers only earn pay when they are actively delivering takeaway food, but not when they are waiting for orders. In order to gain these worker’s rights, Deliveroo couriers would have to be reclassified as workers. A precedent for this was very recently set by cases with Uber drivers in London, where a tribunal stated that Uber drivers were, in fact, workers. Uber is going to appeal the ruling.
