Detroit City Council's vote to reject $102M in union cuts doesn't change a thing
On Tuesday, the Detroit City Council voted against $102 million in proposed cuts for city workers. The cuts are expected to still be implemented, under a consent agreement that gives the city's program management director power to impose the cuts. The director is appointed by the Mayor, who has signed off on the cuts. The cuts would include a 10% pay cuts, lower pensions, increased health care costs and new work rules. The Mayor says that the cuts are necessary for the city's fiscal health. Unions are expected to challenge the cuts in court.
