Detroit employees skip work ahead of privatization of garbage collection
Detroit?s plan to privatize the city?s trash collection has the city?s employees who will be replaced skipping work. The city is already two days behind its scheduled trash pickups partially because of the absenteeism, but also because the increase in trash to be picked up due to yard waste. The Department of Public Works Director, Ron Brundidge, said in a statement that because the city is so far behind in its pick-ups it has brought in an outside contractor to help with the work. The two contracting companies that will take over the city?s trash services in June will also offer curbside recycling and are projected to save the city about $6 million annually.
