Deutsche Post cuts 9,500 DHL jobs
Europe?s largest mail carrier, Deutsche Post, which purchased DHL in 2002, has announced its second round of restructuring for DHL Express in the U.S. this year. On top of the 5,400 jobs already cut this year, the company will cut another 9,500 positions, almost half the workforce, in the U.S. and scale back operations in the States. DHL?s express domestic-only air and ground services in the U.S. will be scrapped entirely ? the company wishes to focus on its international business. The cuts will cost an estimated 3 billions euros, but are expected to decrease U.S. operating costs from 5.4 billion to less than one billion. The restructuring is expected to yield a net loss through 2009. Deutsche Post has said that the U.S. will remain an integral region in the company?s global Express network.
