Dial settles sexual harassment case
In the largest class-action sexual harassment case in five years, the Dial Soap Corporation agreed late yesterday to a $10 million settlement with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) over allegations of pervasive and outrageous harassment (see yesterday's WIT). The settlement also includes an agreement by Dial to submit to two and-a-half years of outside monitoring to ensure that it is complying with changes in personnel policy agreed to in the settlement, but does not contain an admission of guilt by the company. While the Dial settlement is only a third of the $34 million settlement obtained from Mitsubishi America in the largest ever sexual harassment case, the average restitution of over $100,000 for each of the ninety-one women involved in the Dial case is three times larger.
