Divide between the very rich and the vulnerable increases during pandemic
The total wealth of U.S. billionaires has increased by $685 billion since mid-March while, on the other end of the spectrum, approximately 20% of the workforce are unemployed - about 30 million people. For those who have been able to work from home, saving money has been easier due to decreased travel, and home prices have soared, along with high-priced vacation rentals. However, only one in four have been able to work from home. According to the Census bureau, roughly 30 million people reported that they have not had enough to eat sometime in the last seven days. The pandemic has increased the large divide between the poor and the wealthy, with unemployment continuing to hit Black and Hispanic Americans harder than white-collar professionals. Economists are describing it as a K-shaped recovery, where declines are followed by a split in recovery where the wealthy return to normal or even better gains while the poor fall farther behind.
