Don't but South African wines: striking workers' plea to foreign consumers
South African grape pickers are continuing to strike for higher wages. The workers have been demanding a higher wage since November, and clashes with police have led to hundreds of arrests and three deaths. Advocates say that the workers face horrible conditions and low pay, and that people should not buy South African wine until the issues are resolved. Reports have found that many workers are exposed to pesticides and do not have access to water. Companies who buy grapes from South Africa say that they cannot influence the growers on how much to pay their workers.
