Dr. King, Labor Leader
As the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is celebrated today, many forget that he was a prominent labor leader. Lee Saunders, President of the AFSCME explains how Dr. King was closely involved with the labor union movement and campaigned for higher minimum wages, strengthening the Fair Labor Standards Act, and increased job training during the 1963 March on Washington. On the day of his assassination, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was speaking in Tennessee on behalf of the city's sanitation workers. Saunders concludes his piece by calling on Americans to be "more vigilant than ever as guardians of (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s) dream."
