Duquesne Is Accused of Unfair Labor Practices Over Adjunct Layoffs
Duquesne University, which laid off 10 part-time adjunct professors last week, is being accused of unfair labor practices by the United Steelworkers Union. The union has filed two complaints that describe the university as terminating instructors in response to union organizing efforts, as well as weakening potential union membership by shifting academic work to tenured professors. Duquesne, already involved in a case currently before the National Labor Relations Board, has argued, along with other religious universities, that religious freedom would be compromised under the labor board’s oversight.
