Responding to criticism from Arab-American groups that it was not effective enough in combating a wave of workplace discrimination in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has issued updated guidelines to employers on what constitutes illegal on-the-job discrimination. This first reissuing in the past twenty-two years emphasizes the illegality of discrimination against foreign-born workers---an increasingly important issue as the number of immigrants in the U.S. workforce has exploded in the past decade (see WIT for Dec. 2, 2002). In addition to the updated guidelines, that EEOC has also posted hypothetical examples of discrimination against Muslims and Arabs on its website in order to clarify impermissible actions and inactions by employers, as part of its efforts to combat such discrimination.
