Egypt jails journalists' union chief, two others for 2 years
The head of Egypt’s journalists’ union, along with two of its board members, were sentenced to two years behind bars this weekend. Yehia Qalash, Khaled al-Balshy and Gamal Abdel Rahim were convicted of harboring their co workers, who were on the run for spreading false news reports that were critical of the country's military rule. Egyptian authorities have arrested and killed thousands of protestors who oppose President Sisi's leadership, many of whom are journalists. The decision has sparked backlash from groups like Amnesty International, as well has journalists in Cairo who protested outside Journalists’ Syndicate. The three journalists plan to appeal the ruling.
