Employers, not immigrants, targeted
Enforcement of illegal-immigration will be redirected to target employers rather than employees, according to new guidelines issued by the Department of Homeland Security. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, the agency heading the effort to curb and prosecute illegal immigration, was issued a directive to rely more on investigation and audits to build cases against employers who hire illegal immigrants, rather than utilizing anonymous tips. Critics of the plan cite loopholes in immigration law that could mean the deportment of fewer illegal workers than in previous years.
