Eskom deals to avoid W/Cup blackout
The South African National Union of Mineworkers and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa announced on Sunday that they had reached a deal with power company Eskom. The deal will prevent a strike that would have disrupted the final week of the World Cup. The unions will receive a 9% wage increase and a 1,500 rand a month housing allowance. A union official said that they were hopeful that the deal would lead to better labor relations in the future. Others are looking at the deal's effect on public sector pay negotiations, which became deadlocked last month. State employees? unions are asking for a 8.5% pay increase and a 1,560 rand a month housing allowance.
