In New York State essential workers, union leaders and elected officials are pushing for legislation, specifically named the NY Hero Act, that would mandate workplace safety standards for Covid-19 and establish industry-specific worker committees to determine what those standards will be. The NY Hero Act would include fines for businesses that rack up violations and encourage workers to monitor and report them, along with guarantees the workers would be protected from retaliation. As of now the legislation is sponsored by Assemblywoman Karines Reyes, and State Sen. Michael Gianaris.
