European parliament MP says Qatar to improve labor laws
The construction of the 2022 World Cup Stadium in Qatar has been surrounded by controversy since The Guardian reported on the deaths of dozens of immigrant workers, mostly from Nepal, and the appalling conditions where the work was being performed. Although, at the time, both Nepal?s and Qatar?s governments denied the report, it can now be reported that Qatari officials are working on new labor legislation which will improve conditions for immigrant and foreign workers. Qatari officials have laid that the new protections should be law by summer. It is unclear from the most recent reports whether the ?sponsorship? system that ties foreign workers to only one employer will be abolished as part of the reforms, but it is clear that labor unions are very unlikely as officials see them as ?not compatible with national security?.
